History

Bottom of the Hill, located in the Potrero Hill District of San Francisco, California, was originally a restaurant purchased by Dave Benetti around 1990. It reopened in 1991 under the name "Bottom of the Hill" and began to book local punk and rock artists at night, while also exhibiting art on the walls[1]. Over time, the venue's music reputation eclipsed its food service, and it became a significant hub for indie bands[2]. The venue has been described as the heart of San Francisco's indie rock scene and is among the most active, usually holding shows seven nights a week[1]. It has won the Readers' Poll Best of The Bay award for Rock venue 10 years in a row from 2003 to 2012.

Notable Acts

Over the past 30 years, Bottom of the Hill has hosted over 13,000 different bands, with some 30,000 performances[3]. Many bands played at the venue just before they became too big for its size. Notable acts include Arcade Fire, The White Stripes, Oasis, Alanis Morissette, Marilyn Manson, The Strokes, Kid Rock, Pavement, Lush, Green Day, Cake, and Beastie Boys[3].

For Artists

Bottom of the Hill is known for its diverse audience profile, catering to fans of various genres including acoustic rock, alternative rock, blues, electronic, folk, garage, groove, hard rock, indie, punk, reggae, rock, and surf[1]. The venue also features a large antique bar, a kitchen serving hot food, and a patio[1] that allows you to see behind the stage during performances. Known for its supportive atmosphere reputation for being a launching pad for many now-famous bands, Bottom of the Hill is usually active seven nights a week[1].

For Fans

Described as the "heart of SF's indie rock scene", Bottom of the Hill has an energetic atmosphere and lively crowds. You can expect to experience some of the finest original music in San Francisco at Bottom of the Hill. It's an intimate, gritty, character-filled place with devoted regulars that feels like the pulse of the local music scene. With a full bar, a kitchen that stays open late, and a patio area where you can escape the crowd and have a smoke [4], you are bound to have a great live music experience. Unless expressly indicated, Bottom of the Hill is a "21 and over" club[4]. Fans should check the listings in the venue's calendar to see which shows are over 21, and which ones are all ages[4]. The venue is usually open seven nights a week, offering fans plenty of opportunities to catch live performances.

Highlights

Bottom of the Hill has been repeatedly recognized as the best place to hear live music in San Francisco, winning the Readers' Poll Best of The Bay award for Rock venue 10 years in a row from 2003 to 2012[1]. The venue's commitment to showcasing local punk and rock artists and its dedication to hosting shows seven nights a week further highlight its unique position in the music scene. Its reputation among indie bands is formidable, thanks to the booking expertise of co-owner Ramona Downey[2]. Being located in the Potrero Hill District adds to its unique charm, with locals appreciating the nightlife it brings to the area.
